“Do you get into trouble if you don’t go to church?” Answering real questions from real children.
Teaching RE to primary school children is not without its challenges and children’s workers in Dudley and Wolverhampton have been working together to help teachers communicate the Christian faith to their pupils.
Your Question Answered (YQA) is a new video resource that has been produced by Paul Willmott from Stourbridge and Dan Lee from Bilston in partnership with Love Black Country Next Gen.
YQA is a collection of short videos that answer questions about Christianity sent in by primary school aged children.
The videos form a growing catalogue of visual resources which answer real questions from real children. They explore questions such as, “Do you get in trouble if you don’t go to church?”, “What made you want to be a Christian?” and “What do you do at Church?”
Paul is excited about how the videos can support the delivery of RE lessons in schools.
“The YQA videos have been incredibly fun to make so far and are the perfect length and style to help kick start an RE lesson or general discussions about the Christian faith. They could also be useful resources for families to use at home and for children’s workers leading discussions in church-based children’s activities as well.”
Teachers can choose a question from the dedicated YQA YouTube playlist, watch the video with their class, then let everyone share their thoughts too. Teachers and their pupils can also submit their own questions to the YQA team to be answered in future videos via a new YQA webpage.
Dan is looking forward to supporting local schools with credible resources to help teach Christianity in RE lessons.
“We’re eager to spread the word to as many schools as possible about the YQA videos and would love to hear from other Christian children’s workers who may want to be part of answering questions in future YQA videos. The more we partner with each other, the better we can support schools and their RE curriculum.”
