Launched to celebrate National Marriage Week (May 10-16), Claire and Steve Musters take an honest look at how we can strengthen and transform our marriages through God’s redemptive love in their new book Grace-Filled Marriage.
Marriage is a wonderful expression of love, yet it can also sometimes cause us pain. We need God’s help and grace to navigate this most precious of relationships well. Interwoven with biblical teaching and practical application, Claire and Steve Musters honestly share their own story of rebuilding a marriage after loneliness, betrayal and separation. Also included are stories from other couples who have faced specific challenges, such as physical and mental ill health, infertility and cultural differences. Wherever you are on your marriage journey, and whether it is healthy or in need of help, Grace-Filled Marriage gives encouragement that God has a new portion of grace and mercy for you each day.
‘Marriage is hard work, but it is also a wonderful demonstration of the grace of God.’
Grace-Filled Marriage is written by a couple who have had to fight for their marriage. Their honesty brings an authenticity to the book as they share some of the lessons they had to learn the hard way. Claire and Steve say that ‘while we do celebrate how wonderful [marriage] is, we take the lid off many subjects that still don’t seem to be talked about much in churches and openly address them.’ This realism underpins the theme of grace that runs through the book as they acknowledge that they needed God’s grace to work through the hard times, but also that we all need God’s grace to keep a marriage strong day by day. As well as dealing with their own journey with infidelity, it also includes personal stories from others such as Sheridan Voysey on the heartache of infertility, Will and Lucinda Van Der Hart on dealing with acute anxiety, Diane and Patrick Regan on physical and mental ill health, and Chine McDonald on the impact of cultural differences. These voices add a powerful and relatable dimension to the teaching in the book.
Getting couples to be honest with each other and enabling churches to nurture these relationships is a real passion for both Claire and Steve. That is why they are delighted that the book will be part of the Big Church Read (more info here), which will be launching to coincide with National Marriage Week (more info here). This nationwide initiative enables churches to read the book, access video content from Claire and Steve and discuss questions together.
As well as practical help, guidance and lessons, Grace-Filled Marriage also offers a biblical view of marriage, describing it as ‘a powerful gift of grace from God’. Biblical and theological insights enable us to see marriage as God intended: not just as it should be between a couple, but what marriage shows the wider world – the unconditional love of God. As Steve says, ‘Scripture is bookended with weddings. Our own marriages, therefore, become sermons about God’s love towards his creation – about Jesus’ love for his church.’
‘Hands down the most refreshing book on marriage I have ever read. It is honest, gritty and real, but ultimately it is also wise and hope-filled . . . I would prescribe it to every couple if I could.’ Cathy Madavan, speaker, writer, broadcaster and author
Launching in National Marriage Week, Grace-Filled Marriage takes an honest look at the realities of marriage – celebrating its beauty but also recognising the very real challenges we face in our relationships.
